I voted (imagine me saying this smugly) I'm smug! Smug!

I didn't go to that show last night which probably means it was amazing. I think the Armeniac went, but because he can't read anymore (dead computer) I guess he can't tell me how it was. I wanted to go, but 10:00 (or later) is soooooo late to start on a monday night.

Oasis was pretty well behaved last night except when Liam offered me a shag in the loo. I don't really know British slang but I don't think that's very nice so I politely turned him down.

If you are worried you won't have time to vote today I wouldn't because it took me about 30 seconds. So go on your lunchbreak or something and help us stick it to the governor in the way he deserves.

I'm sure that C.H. can give me some good advice, but for additional points of view, I'd like to ask if you had about two days in D.C. to do touristy type stuff what would you do? I've already ruled out the Holocaust museum because I've spent about 15% of my waking life thinking about the Holocaust so I don't think it's a must-see for me. So whaddya say?

Also, I'd like to officially proclaim that Animal Collective is the best band in the world right now. Does anyone care to dispute this? I'd like to see you try.

There is a state law requiring employers to give people as much time as they need to vote. So aside from the personal time cost, there isn't any monetary loss. And therefore, no excuses!

Smithsonian (duh). It will take you all day...

Try not to drive a car in DC, it's impossible. Take the Metro or make someone drive you. I went there once for work and stayed in Georgetown. Georgetown was fun for looking at old buildings and buying stuff, which is all I had time to do between meetings. That's also the place to find the staircase from the Exorcist movie. I never made it there, but seems like it'd be fun to take pictures of your friends tumbling down the steps.

Yeah I meant Georgetown not GWU. I think..

Where are you staying in DC?

My favorite place to go is the Pharmacy Bar.

Niki's right. Don't drive, and check out Georgetown. Isn't there an H&M in Georgetown?

There is an H&M in Georgetown right on the main drag, M street? But I'm sure she'll have a chance to stop at one in NY, where they're spread like a rash on the city. There's also a Lush if you're into buying expensive soap by the pound that smells like candy. Oh yeah! If you ride the Metro...don't eat or drink on it! DC is the place where the little girl got arrested for eating a french fry or something.

yeah, I'm hitting H&M in NY. So I guess I'll leave my one full day there for the Smithsonian. I just checked and they're open every day and free?! Seems too good to be true. I probably won't be checking out any space-related stuff because I don't really give a crap about space. I'm glad it's out there and all, but I don't like to think about it too much because it creeps me out. How can it just go on and on? Forever? My head hurts when I think about it.

That is the best thing about D.C., all the museums are free! Side note: H&M is opening in SF in a couple of weeks.

I've been to DC something like five times and only got to do my touisty stuff in little snippets. If you've never done it, the walk from the Capitol to the Lincoln Memorial is very cool. Except this time of year it might also be very cold.

The FDR memorial is very cool at night, especially if it's below freezing. Seriously. All that ice...

My fondest memories of DC are of the Smithsonian. Some of the most amazing art west of Europe! Let me know if you agree.

I have to second or third or fourth the vote to go to the Smithsonian, actually aren't there multiple Smithsonians? I might be making that up. Multiple buildings? Whatever. Just go. It's really amazing. I say this from the perspective of my eight year old self who is near the end of an East Coast trip that involved being dragged to every museum and art gallery in NYC and being bored out of my skull. Except at the Gugglyheim. that was fun to run around in. Anyway, I had a good time at the Smithsonian.

Second on the Pharmacy bar. That whole neighborhood's the best. Too many good restaurants to mention. Avoiding driving, at least during rush hour, because D.C. has th' second-worst big-city drivers I've encountered behind greater Boston. The best Smithsonoians are National History and the National Gallery, right next to each other on the Mall, and probably not that crowded with touristsas this time of year.

So no one dares to counter my claim about the Animal Collective? Then it's official. World's greatest. Not R. Kelly as he would claim.

I can't believe Liam is gonna let this go by without comment. Let me ask you this, if their so bloody great how come I never heard of em? How many records have the sold? A hundred? Probablly all to pale faced students in bedsits. Sad. These twats couldn't sell out the fookin loo at Knebworth.

make it vote number 10 - the Smithsonian!

the space one is really cool- even for none spacers. the Holocaust museum is not for the emotional kind. it was pretty awful and i hated every minute of it. but in a way, i think it was important to see.

also, double on Georgetown. and i highly reccomend the National Cathedral. it's an amazing building. there are some great gargoyles on the outside. including a Darth Vader. there's some incredible stained glass (one holds real moon rocks), MLK Jr. held his last sermon there, and i think one of our presidents is entombed there as well.

the subways are really impressive in DC. the Kennedy airport. the Arlington cemetary and Mount Vernon are both great too. honestly? i think the White House may have been the least impressive thing i saw there. and even that was pretty cool.

heckasac, don't listen to any of these posers telling you to hang out in georgetown. waste of your fucking time.

you should go to the national zoo, it's free (smithsonian) and has a lot of awesome stuff. i fucking hate pandas, but if you are into those jerks, you can go see the newborn baby. otherwise, there are bison, maras (my favorite rodent!), gibbons, tons of big cats, blah blah. it's a very beautiful park and lovely to walk around. the weather should be good while we are there, so don't pass up the chance.

as far as the museums go, i recommend the natural history museum, the american history museum (lots of great pop culture exhibits), and both the national art gallery and hirschorn. the hirschorn is more the 'modern' art museum that has changing exhibits. the national gallery is HUGE and you could easily spend a whole day there. my favorite gallery, however, is the Sackler, which is mostly Asian and Western European art.

you are staying in dupont circle, which is a nice area just to walk around. there are some decent restaurants there and an array of bars.

phramacy bar, as mentioned previously, is pretty decent. good jukebox, okay prices. asylum is a pretty cheesy biker bar just a block up from there, and they have good cheap dive food and $2 shiner draft happy hour specials.

the raven is a pretty 'hip' bar in mount pleasant. it gets incorrectly branded a hipster bar, but really it's just a dive bar in an area getting steadily gentrified.

there is also the black cat. i'm going to be there a couple of nights while i'm in town, so you should come out for a drink. around the corner is an obnoxious yuppie bar called saint ex that is actually a nice place for a chimay as long as it's not an overcrowded weekend.

get yourself a halfway decent map and WALK EVERYWHERE. the train system is pretty decent, but dc is a small city and you can walk anywhere you would want to go. personally, i'm very excited to actually spend half my day walking around.
