nada

So far I got nothin' for today. I started my review of Hustle and Flow so I won't forget it completely by tomorrow.

I ate at Maalouf's last night for the first time in a while and it was fucking delicious. Don't forget to eat at Maalouf's when you're out that way to see a movie!!! They should get way more business than they do. I get mad when I think about the places that get so much business while Maalouf's only does OK. Sometimes the owner seems sad about it.

Thanks for telling me about Maalouf's Heckasac! I love that place SO much. For a while Mike and I were eating lunch there every Saturday and I started to feel a little embarrassed about it. But there is no place else in town that can make a falafel sandwich even half as good. And the Kibbee sandwich has french fries IN it for crying out loud! The owners are so nice too.

Even just the simple Greek salad has some kind of delicious spice on it. And I love the eggplant sandwich. The owner just opened a coffee shop called "Damascus Coffee" next door and I'm worried it won't do well. It looks like he spent a lot of money on it. He put sheepskins around to make it more like a coffee (or tea) shop back home. It breaks my heart to think it might not succeed. Maybe it will. I wish there was a bigger middle eastern population in Sac.

location, location, location.

There is a void in downtown for that kind of food. I'm sure if they moved more towards that area, they'd be slammed. I love that place too, but I have witnessed the owners of Maalouf's being dicks to people for no apparent reason. Maybe that's why they are empty most of the time.

They definitely broke my balls when I went.

maybe someone can flyer for them downtown. we could start a marketing coalition to get the word out. that said, i've never been. maybe i'll check it out this weekend.

wait, what? dicks? in what way? they're always so nice when i go. i've never heard that before. i think they'd do better if they were downtown, but i don't have enough faith in people's taste in food to say they'd be "slammed" and the rent in that strip mall has gotta be dirt cheap.

Hey, I'm just saying...if you're a dude, expect a side order of broken balls with your meal. If you're a chick, expect them to act all sad about how crappy their restaurant is doing.

I was there, the cook was being a dick, but these girls were being sassy back. It just kind of escalated and they got kicked out. What happened was the girls came in and wanted to just order appetizers and drinks, but the cook wasn't having it. He wanted them to order full meals because "this isn't that kind of place!", but they didn't want to and so they both argued about it. The girls were sort of rough looking and I think the cook was being too combative and judgemental. I would still eat there because it's great food, but you better bet I'm only ordering full meals. If you feel like having calimari and cosmos, Maalouf's is not the place for it.

oh, duh, you're totally right. grace and i just wanted to split two things and the lady didn't seem happy about it, even though she is really cool. we both ordered a glass of wine and it ended up being over 25 for the two of us, but i still felt defensive. when people said being mean i didn't think of that. they should chill on that but i'm sure it stems from the stress of having a struggling small business.

Niki is talking about the situation I witnessed. I mean, the sign clearly states that you have to order a main course entree if you order an appetizer, and the group of young ladies just wanted to split something and drink beers. Seems like the drink sales alone would make up for it, but if the owners are that picky, and are sticklers for their own rules, then more power to them (and less pity to them as well). Being a witness to the whole situation just made me feel uneasy. I guess the group would have been wiser to ask if the owners could make an exception before they sat down, and not make a scene. I go there to eat meals, so they like me.

I've said it before and I'll say it again....if you like your balls broken or busted, roasted or broasted, braised or bernaised, then Maalouf's is your kind of joint, man.
