Chicken Little is right!

OK, so maybe Tower wasn't just crying wolf with this Century theater expansion thing. The Bee has an article about how various theaters in Cali have prompted the attorney general to investigate whether Century is using illegal business methods to squeeze out local arthouse theaters: http://www.sacbee.com/content/business/story/12718371p-13570636c.html
City councilman Rob Fong weighed in by saying that it shows "independent operators" have a right to be concerned. Well, I guess you can argue about the meaning of the term "independent", but regardless I guess Tower could really be in trouble if Century intends to pressure distributors to give them the big arthouse movies.

That reminds me, the article says that the new screens are going to be over Morton's. Has anyone gone to Morton's? I forgot that we even had one in Sac. Add it to the list of local steakhouses I've never tried along with the Broiler, Chops, etc. I don't really get the big deal with steak.

LCD Soundsytem is playing with M.I.A. at the Fillmore, and the show is approaching fast! It's saturday, May 14th. I will probably buy a ticket within a few days.

The Bananas are playing at Gilman on friday. People should caravan, that's always a good time. The Gilman kids love them some Bananas. They usually end up jamming the stage and all trying to sing into the mic. It's pretty cute.

It looks like I'm going to be flying to New York for a long weekend within the next few weeks. My plan is to eat at a few really good restaurants, visit the Cloisters (inspired by an article in the New Yorker on the unicorn tapestries), and of course go shopping at H & M. Maybe I will see an Olsen twin this time but nothing will ever beat my Vincent Gallo sighting last time, nothing.

I'm listening to the Os Novos Bainos (I think "os" means "the" so I guess I just said it twice) Smashing Times for the first time. I can't even describe how great it sounds. I'm just furiously scribbling the mental images that come to mind...let's see...I'm hungry...I should hurry up and write this and go do some work...what should I eat for lunch today?... Ok that didn't work. I'm no Sasha Frere-Jones. If you run into Miller, bug him to give you a copy. I hope he's not annoyed that I wrote that.

I am going to try to scan in the Ratgrabbin' pics today so stay tuned...

I think I will bug miller about the Smashing Times. He keeps saying he'll give me them, but he's just a tease so far.

I went to Morton's way back in '98 to celebrate my brother's birthday and the only thing I really remember is the cart of steaks they roll out to you as a menu. My brother ordered the most expensive steak and he seemed to enjoy it. It was sort of like we were all sitting around him watching him eat. The waiters were big and the lights were dim. Just like Chicago, but smack in the middle of Westfield Plaza.

I have been to Mortons.
It was really good, the creamed spinich was the best, and of of course the steak was delicious.
Its dark and swanky inside, and chris Webber had his own private wine locker behind the cash register with his name engraved on a golden plaque.
Plus, while Jana was waiting for me and Gillie they gave her a free tiny steak sandwich in the bar (they do have a bar, check it out)
I was also pleased that Jana parked her bike right out front, by the valet dudes.

I have a question, I have hesitated to ask but, what is the deal with Vincent Gallo?
I know I tend to swing closer to dorkster than hipster but what is so good about him,
I heard buffalo 66 was ok and I am intrigued by his choice
of reversal film stock, but besides that what gives?
a hummer from fashion victim
chloe sevigny? a weird creepyness? implied cool?
please tell me, someone.

thank you.

i've heard vincent gallo's solo music project bites. never heard it but matt saw him live at ATP in england last year and it inspired pity amongst many people in the audience. i think vg is one of those dudes that did something cool (buffalo 66) a number of years ago and is just riding off it until he strikes at another good idea. he's also WAY too skinny.

His music doesn't seem very good. My personal thing with him is that I really like Buffalo 66 and I just think he's really funny. His interviews usually crack me up, even more because of his random militant conservatism and such. I think he's eccentric to the max and insecure and a fame whore and all that but it's really entertaining to me.

He also deals with cold, wintery NYC nights by finding "snow bunnies" to hump in the streets.

more gossip on V.G.: showed up with PJ Harvey at ATP (not sure if they were knockin' boots). brought tshirts with his face silk screened on it next to other celebrity faces (like richard nixon) and tried to sell them for 70 GBP each. matt's friend drove him to the market outside the ATP grounds and he tried to steel a beer from this dude. but, once caught, he apologized and replaced the beer. so. . .i guess he's not that bad of a guy. all in all, he's just a weird dude.

I've never been to the Cloisters. A unicorn tapestry you say?

thanks for the illumination on the Gallo thing.
I guess I might try reading some interview or something, stealing a beer though, weird and shady.
however, Becky is a smart lady and I did once watch her turn down a wedding reception full of liquor, food and the four eyes to go see the blow job movie so I guess there might be something I don't see.
although I am a huge pig and nothing makes me turn down all you can eat shrimp platter.

Yeah, i agree with Becky that the article piqued my interest in the Cloisters...apparently the uinicorn tapestries are breathtaking, especially from the back where the colors haven't faded.

Not just any unicorn tapestry. The top-grossing, most critically acclaimed unicorn tapestry of all time, starring Tom Cruise as the wayward unicorn. Ask Karl about it, isn't he getting his Ph.D. in unicorn tapestries?

Just a joke, not a gibe.

Gallo is a spooky motherfucker, that's for sure, but Buffalo 66 is a terrific movie.

Meanwhile, I'd like to explore the idea of writing something about the Loft: Maybe something long. Wanted to know if you Lofters would be willing to talk to me or if you think of me irreversably as the enemy / idiot / j.o. / asshole. I'm not sure if "irreversably" is spelled correctly so you can add "bad speller" to that list as well.

I figure how that the Loft is over it can be safely embalmed. I'm kidding (kind of). I've heard it called the important "venue" in Sacramento ever but it's history is untold. Thing is: I don't know any of the Loft people and in fact most of the people I talk to know about it but seemingly few have first hand experience. I know some (most or all) of you here have and do, so I'm asking: Can we talk about it?

Freaky,

CK

Whoah, CK

A loft article? I say awesome. Why not? There are no longer shows there, and the shows that have been there have been the best in Sac history. Did someone say The Four Eyes?

woah is right!

I have to say I object. It's not going to come out right, it's not going to be the complete story, and then it's going to make everyone mad because it's so important to us.

I say he should do it. It will be funny no matter what angle he takes. Maybe it will even perpetuate the timeless Loft v. Sac Pop rivalry myth!

someone did say four eyes. Perhaps a blow by blow account of each four eyes x-mas show to be read in real time.

I still don't get the rivalry thing. but those damm young lipstick upstarts, fuck them. They are so rude and cliquey and hipstery and unfriendly.
Who the fuck do they think they are.

oh wait I just got it.

Gallo-Sac Connection: recently ended intense phone sex, nudie photo emailing, relationship with lovely Sacto downtown lass. When things started to verge on getting real, he bailed. Yuckie! Oh, the things you hear but can't talk about!!! Including "nobody's ever sent me nude photos before", when there evidently are nude photos sent to G included on his website!
And yes, it really was VG.
