boooooring

In super boring news, my love affair with google chrome is over! It started to sour when I could no longer check my bank account on it, and today when I tried to sign into gmail I got a message that that website was not supported in that browser! They created the website.  Oh, google chrome, remember when you used to autofill everything to a ridiculous degree and now you autofill nothing even when I tell you to remember something.  You are too capricious, it's over.
This cubano sandwich from Fat Face was really, really good. It maybe could use a little more tang.  One of my favorite things about this kind of sandwich is that it's supposed to have mustard on it.  Troy Mighty's art opening is tonight, so I might eat at Fat Face again!
Had to pick up Marie's for a meeting this morning.  I went with a coconut cake donut, an unorthodox choice for me.  Speaking of orthodox, happy Passover! I am actually going to a seder, like a real Jew.  I just picked up some kosher Israeli wine.

introducing Peggy Benks

Bows is the only venue that seems to have much going on lately, of course that is just my opinion (I'm talking to you Sacramento Punk Shows).  This Friday is Troy Mighty's art opening.  I really like Troy's stuff. It is quite pleasing to the eye.

Next week (wed) the Sandwitches are playing, with Peggy Benks, who if I understand this correctly is a performance art/singing thing from Liz Donner? Sounds awesome.  There's a picture. That's a real Cabaret look (a very good look).
I you ready for some mediocre food photos?  Good! I have been fucking with the settings on my camera and maybe some of these photos will be ok.  This is a frisee, celery root, toasted pecan salad.  I think raw celery root and toasted pecan is one of the best flavor combos around.  I also recently made a grated celery root, roasted pecan, apple salad with a skosh of mayo in the dressing.

More stuff after the jump

Davis facts

Three, three I say, people darted in front of my car in downtown Davis today. No crosswalks, nothin'.  Also Bassnectar is the grossest band name.

let the arguing begin

I just have not been feeling Heckasac lately.  I mean, I've been feeling heckasac but not like posting.

The Halloween show Roundtable happened at Roundtable on Sunday.  There were no representatives for the young people (I'd say the median age was 37) so consequently one of the frontrunners is....oldies.

Friday at the crest

Thumbs up on Hunger Games! Not the most exciting action movie, but it's really good.

I had the best meal at Kru last night! The mixed seaweed salad is really good and healthful (is that the right way to use that word?), although way too big for one.  That I got chef's choice nigiri, which is what I usually do, and one of the pieces was this cute little gift piece topped with uni and pork belly.  I also got local sturgeon nigiri, which was topped with thin slices of red onion and sitting in a pool of chili oil.  MH got ankimo, monkfish liver, which is served on a big bowl of ice with three tiny, tart Japanese peaches on top.  Now that I say that it seems weird, they weren't plums, were they? I think she said peaches.  Anyway, top notch meal.

MOM and one of Charles' many bands, Rad, is playing at Axewave Manor tonight.  Early show, starts at 7pm.
How do I find this place?

Do you guys know about the screening of The Ballad of Genesis and Lady Jaye at the Crest this Friday?  Here are the details.  I'm excited to see it.

Bananas at the wedding

I have been too busy to post!  The Bananas played a wedding in San Pedro on Saturday, for Kid Kevin, one of their oldest and dearest fans/friends.  Pictures after the jump

idea

Pink Floyd won for best Halloween band, followed by The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly. I had an odd fascination with Spaghetti Westerns as a kid, but have not watched any since then.  What's the best one.

Al and I came up with the idea for an awards ceremony for the Halloween show, and of course the bands need to play at it.  We tried to come up with a catchy name and settled on....the sammies.  Or maybe the hammies?  Moons over my hammie?

Wednesday, March 21, 2012

sorry, Charlie

Wow, Pink Floyd is demolishing the competition.  I'm surprised OMF isn't stuffing the ballot box.  I really got nothin' to post besides that.  Unless you want me to talk to you about yoga or the movie Meek's Crossing.  Here's goes:
most hated pose: Hanuman or  possibly revolved half moon, anything revolved, really
thumbs up on Meek's Crossing.  It wasn't that boring. I get far more bored at a big, loud blockbuster than when watching a woman in a bonnet knead bread.  And if fit in perfectly with the Donner Party podcast I listened to recently.

Ramtha

I don't usually write that  much personal stuff, or at least not about my (non-sordid) past, but a podcast I was listening to yesterday got me thinking.  The woman on the podcast was talking about how she was a Buddhist in the late 80s/early 90s, but how this brand of Buddhism was all about chanting "nom myoho renge kyo" to get what you want.  So, like the opposite of what Buddhism actually teaches, as far as I know.

My aunt and my mom were totally into this at that same time.  They both set up Buddhist altars (and spent a bunch of money on them, because the idea is that you would get more stuff if you had a sick altar) and would chant all the time with something in mind that they wanted.  These could be things like health, or actual material object, sometimes specific ones, sometimes just chanting for money.  I, of course, was cynical and sarcastic about the whole thing.  And bitter that my mom was spending money on that crap.

Around the same time, my mom and aunt also got super into Ramtha.  They would watch grainy videotapes of her/him.  What's Ramtha?  He's a spiritual warrior from Atlantis who is channeled by a women named J.Z. Knight, which is obviously a fake name.  That a picture of here above, and here's a clip of her on the Merv Griffin show, rocking her super fake Ramtha accent. I like that Merv Griffin is busting her chops.

Other things my mom got into in the 80s/90s: feng shui, herbal medicine (including trying to start an herb farm at our house). Her and my dad took a ton of St. Jon's Wort for a while, to try to cure their depression.  There's probably other stuff I'm forgetting/blocking out.  Oh yeah, way earlier, maybe 1984 or 1985 my parents tried writing a romance novel together.  They wrote some steamy scenes.  I remember a line about a man cupping a woman's buttocks.  In a real shocker, they fit perfectly into his cupped hands.

Halloween show poll

At right.

handle yourselves

Holy crap did you guys venture out on St. Patrick's Day?  It was terrifying out there.  The town was taken over by sloppy, wasted zombies.  What the fuck is wrong with people? Handle yourself! There were cops everywhere and I'd love to know how many DUIs were handed out.  I'm pretty sure I saw one go down on J st.  I saw the cop turn his flashers on.

Woah, someone got killed right near McKinley Park on Sunday? I went for a walk around there yesterday and didn't see anything.  Well, I saw some crime tape but I thought it was from a car accident.

It's really starting to sink in about MidMo now.  Nothing else is going to come up for me, writing-wise.  I have a couple of things lined up for the SNR but they don't really need food-related stuff very often and I like writing that the best.  I don't feel like pitching other pubs.  Anybody got any ideas?

absolutely anything

Oh boy, this picture is kinda ugly.  The corned beef was delicious, though! We busted out the electric knife, because that's what our dads would have done.
This guy will solo on anything!

NH is requesting that people send the best photos and videos of the Halloween Show to her so she can aggregate them and post.  rosalitahead@gmail.com

Do it! Some people aren't on facebook, remember.

Mariscos Mazatlan

Do you guys know about the SLA/English Singles show on Saturday at Luigis?  The Singles haven't played in forever!
Dang! Look what Morant's has right now!  St. Patty's day sausages filled with potato, corned beef and cabbage.  I got a couple, and I got a big slab of brisket from Corti's.  Morant's is selling corned beef as well.  We're having it tonight. Psyched.
I think Mariscos Mazatlan is criminally underrated.  I think it feels the most like chilling in Mazatlan of any place I've been outside of Maz.  This is a Mazatlan tostada.  It has shrimp, octopus and I think the dude said abalone.  It had hot salsa on it and strips of red onion, so quite different from the usual ceviche.
God they make a great torta.  Their bolillo is my favorite. It's small and they grill it perfectly.

blast from the past

You guys probably read this on fb, but here's a link in case you haven't.  An outsider's opinion on how bad we're getting screwed with the new arena plan.
So, here's some photographic proof that I often lose my shit at the Halloween show.  This is me ripping Joel's shirt off as he performs as George Michael.  This picture is pretty awesome.  I don't know who took it.  Does anyone know what year this was?  Sorry Joel.

Now that there's no MidMo, I guess I will be writing about food more.
Went out for breakfast at OneSpeed.  It looked beautiful but tasted just ok.  Everything needed salt.  This carnitas breakfast needed hotter salsa.
This is my dish: roasted chicken hash with shitake mushroom and peppers.  It was kind of cold, one of the eggs had a jellied white part, which grosses me out, but that I know is hard to avoid if you're trying not to over-poach.  It was bland overall.
This is bun bo hue from Pho King #2.  This place seems awesome.  It has some unsual dishes on the menu, like a duck salad and an ox pizzle (dick) salad.  I did not try those yet.  EC got the grilled pork chop and it came with a really pretty little egg cake with jelly noodles and ground pork.

a few Halloween show pics

Cute!  J.K., I was at the show! I remember...most of it.  Pictures after the jump!

hmmmm

Wow, I'm really bummed I didn't make it to the Halloween show this weekend.  Darned hangnail.  I heard it was really good.  It's weird that even though I didn't attend that I woke up in the morning with bruised knees and every muscle in my body was sore.  A real head scratcher.

you oughtta know

Well, it's official.  The people have voted to bring blueberry back.  He's right, it certainly upped my blog hits.  For a couple of days there I was getting like 450 hits a day! And I don't know if you guys know this, but I've worked out this deal with blogger where I get ten dollars a hit, so let me just say I've built a tidy little nest egg in the last few weeks.  And let me also say that I have spend most of it on nuts.

You know what's going on this weekend.  I don't have to say a thing.

Ella!!!!!!

Here's a clue to the SECRET PLAN.

Wow, so Ella last night.  I didn't take any pictures.  Here are some of the things:

Best Gibson ever on the menu.  Made with Junipero gin (the stuff that Anchor Brewing distills) and dry vermouth and a cipollini onion sprig.  Man, I keep thinking about buying some gin and I thought I might get Right gin, but I am getting Junipero for sure.  The difference between a good martini (or gibson) and a bad one is as wide as the Pacific Ocean.  They are two different beasts.  That reminds me, my cocktail article is in the SNR today, but it looks super weird on their website.  My intro is not there and neither is about half the article.  Check it in the print edition.

Started with a beet salad, which I had at the bar a couple of weeks ago.  First of all, it's beautifully assembled and looks like a little work of art.  A few different colors of beets, some roasted, some shaved raw.  A micro cipollini onion with tiny little roots intact.  Can you imagine cleaning the dirt out of the tiny roots to serve?  Crazy.  Micro beet greens included too.  Sitting on a pool of fenugreek aioli.  The awesome thing is that the earthy flavor of the fenugreek makes this salad like a distillation of eating the earth, if that makes sense.  It's like eating delicious dirt?  Or sticking your tongue into fresh spring garden soil?  Or going down on Mother Earth?  Have I gone too far?

Then he gave us some crudites, with romesco, and a cucumber blossom attached to a cucumber the size of a gnomes pinky.  With avocado puree for dipping.

The large portion of mussels (18 bucks) which I ordered as an entree was much too large for one person, even as an entree, so you could definitely economize by splitting that.  The mussels were very smoky because they are roasted and there is smoked olive oil in the mix.  I think they were the best I've ever had, and the roasted shishito peppers add such a wonderful bitter, verdant flavor!  The pork belly was tough and dry and didn't add a lot.

What else, oh yeah battered and fried frog legs with big sprigs of rosemary.  They were perfectly salted and the rosemary was a great flavor combo with the legs.  Thiemann is a master of salt.  This dish was so good with a delicious glass of Vouvray.

Sweetbreads with celery and dates.  The celery flavor was strong.  I love celery.

I advise you to go and focus on the vegetables and small plates.  I don't think chefs get that excited for entrees, in general.  Everyone liked their entrees but it's more fun to graze than end the meal with a big heavy slab of meat.

I had dessert in a glass: the Pedro Jimenez Lustau sherry, which was really raisin-y and viscous.  I really wanted to end the meal with the Cocchi Barolo Chinato, and I should have done that!  I always prefer the bitter to the sweet.  Just like life?

The end.  Wonderful evening.

dese nuts

I am  getting excited about the Beatles, er, Halloween show.  Me and some other ladies have a SECRET PLAN.

Have you noticed how expensive nuts are these days? It's crazy.  Nuts are a central feature of most salads I make, as well as the granola I eat every morning.  The price of nuts is too damn high! Gripe of the day.

Do you guys think I should have told Blueberry to go away? Poll at right.

I am going to Ella tonight! Stoked to see what vegetable wizardry Thiemann will pull off.   Make sure to buy the Lucky Peach that he's in, his part is really good.

siiiiicckkkkk

Hey guys, remember this? What a rush.

SacPress published a MidMo story.  The quote at the end is really funny!  Better to just pull a quote from FB rather than use that one.

Well well well.  The No Bunny/MOM/G.Green show...I am so mad at myself that I was in a bad mood and couldn't enjoy it to its fullest.  I guess I did go out four nights in a row, and maybe tonight, for the La Sera show.  Anyway, G. Green was tight.  Really good.  MOM let it all hang out and I always think she can't surprise me and then she does.  She started into her Spirit In The Sky jam, and she was swinging her mic around, and exactly with the beat she accidentally cracked the light fixture over her head and glass rained down.  Then she danced in the glass (people rushed to cover it up quickly) and starting spreading bloody footprints through the crowd.  There were some pretty bro-ey college students there and it was fun to watch their horrified faces as they tried to figure out what was going on.  Then Tony from No Bunny's band painted Dan's (ex Makout Party RIP) with MOM's blood.  That was pretty siiiiiiiickkkk.  No Bunny was a phenomenon as usual, although it got so fucking hot in there I had to bail for a minute.  I love when he mixes Surfin' Bird in because I feel like it's a mini Cramps tribute.

Pictures after the jump! Sadly, not of the show!

hello darkness my old friend

JK with that header, kind of.

Well, it's true.  MidMo is dead.  I've known for a bit that it was a possibility, ever since Capitol Weekly really suddenly pink slipped everyone and went to online-only.  OMF has been trying to hold things together and shop it around, and there were some good prospects but nothing came through.  So it wasn't from lack of profitability, it was because we lost our infrastructure (ad staff, designer, etc.)  We were actually growing a bit every year, and in the last couple months had gotten a lot of ad interest.  We had just started running Closet Case, which I thought was a great fit for us.

I'm really sad about it.  It's going to be really different for me, since I have been writing about 3 restaurants per month for over five years.  Think about it!  Plus, other features every other month or so, plus doing associate editor work for the last however many months.  I have a lot of free time now, I guess?  I can't wait to start...yarn-bombing?

I'm really sad because I'm going to miss the writing of our contributors.  It is a crying shame if there is no outlet for MH to write about wine, or BB to write about history.  I love the voice of the Sactorialist, this one is my favorite one.  I loved our music and arts coverage, too, and the other food contributors.  I love Tim's art writing, and always wished he had more time to do it.

I think it's a sad day for Sac.  I know it was only a little free weekly, but it really was a unique voice in our community.  Silenced.

brew excitement

Duuuuuudes, ransacked broke the biggest beer story of beer week.  Kupros (somehow) scored a keg of Pliny the Younger and became the scalpers of the beer world and tried to completely gouge people for it.  Now they are banned from Russian River Beers for life!  Swift justice.

I am so stoked about the event at Pangaea tonight (see list of beers below), starts at 6.  My only qualm is how I am going to try all the beers I want on this list without getting completely trashed.  That calls for willpower that I really don't have when confronted with so much delicious brew.  I want quaff the Cantillon Lou Pepe Kriek,  the Jolly Pumpkin Maricaibo Especial, at least one of the Mikkeller collabos, the very delicious smoked beer from Norwegian brewery Haanbryggeriet, the classic fresh, hoppy brau Taras Boulba, fuckkkk. All of them, just about. And the keg of Younger might still be in effect.   I will fortify myself with a sandwich from Gunther's first.

Or maybe a sandwich from Fat Face, because Bows is having an art opening tonight: Verge artist Ianna Frisby's embroidery pieces.  Also, bathroom polaroids by Sarah Barkawi.

I might be at Bows a lot this weekend, cuz Hummel's hangover waffle brunch is on Sunday.  Also on Sunday, Rob is doing a very smart thing at Pangaea and having a keg blowout of all his leftover stuff from Beer Week.  Hopefully there are some discounts to be had?  At least he won't charge you 45 bucks for a glass of Pliny the Younger!

still knocking

I got nothin' today except a couple of links.

This is the guy I get my coffee from. He delivers it to my lab every week.  Looks like he's starting to deliver to Sac.  Contact him at coffee@thepepperpeddlar.com if you are interested.  He delivers it in mason jars and you can choose the roast you want.  I think it's 13 bucks a mason jar, which lasts me and Scott a week drinking coffee at home every day.

This is the band I get my music from. The record is solid as a rock.

check this crazy list

I just started with a big arena thing and then deleted it three times. Never mind.

The Anchor Brewing night was really fun! Kane from Anchor was cool and clearly could talk about Anchor forever.  We had a really engaged crowd.  A few Anchor superfans.

Natalie wanted me to remind people to go to the Halloween show blog (linked at right) and tell them which bands are actually happening. That will help with scheduling.

Dudes, the Shelton Bros event at Pangaea on Friday is going to be off the chain.  So many crazy good brews. Here's a list:

De Ranke Noir - cross btw abbey dubbel/Belgian stout - Belgium
Cantillon Lou Pepe Kriek - Belgium
Jolly Pumpkin Maracaibo Especial - sour brown w/ cocoa, cinnamon, spices - USA
Mikkeller/BrewDog I Beat yoU IPA - Denmark/Scotland
Mikkeller/Three Floyds Boo Goop - hoppy buckwheat wine - Denmark/USA
Haandbryggeriet Hesjeol - multi grain, slightly smoked traditional Norwegian brew - Norway
De La Senne Taras Boulba - hoppy pale ale - Belgium
Oppigards Well Hopped Lager - Sweden
Mahr's Ungespundet Lager - unfiltered kellerbier- Germany
Dieu du Ciel Route des Epices Rye Pepper Ale (green & Black peppercorns) - Canada

leave it alone

Cool, torrential rain should really help the attendance at the Anchor event tonight.  Oh well.  I'm stoked about a sandwich and a Liberty Ale and watching the Beer Hunter.

I know a lot of important stuff went down in Sac yesterday.  The arena, the White Supremacists vs. Occupy, but let's talk about something that really important:

All the cars I've ever had have had over 100,000 miles, some way over.  At that point, things start to break, such as door handles, windows, etc.  One of the things that often breaks is the thing that pops the gas cap open.  My blue Geo had that problem, and now my 92 Honda has that problem.  So to open it, I need two people, one to press the thingy on the inside and one to press the thingy on the outside (like sex).  I hate asking people at the gas station to do it.  So you would think the solution would be to just leave the thing popped all the time (like sex), right?  Well, I try to do that and every time, within a day, some psychopath walking by shuts it.  Why? Why? Why? Do you think this is your good deed for the day?  Do you think someone is going to STEAL MY GAS if you don't do this?  Have you ever actually seen anyone siphoning gas out with a garden hose and mouth suction (like sex)?  This is not the depression, no one is doing that!!  Leave it alone, I beg you. Do another good deed, like picking a gum wrapper up off the sidewalk.

OK, I just have to comment on this arena headline: elation now - big votes next.  Elation? Isn't that a little strong?  Besides K.J., Breton, and a few developers who stand to make a bunch, is anyone really "elated"?

clownin' around

I did a lot of clownin' around this weekend, as you can see.
The only beer week event I've attended thus far is the Ruhstaller brunch at Bows which was AWESOME.  Really well attended, and the weather on the patio was perfect.
This is a Black IPA (good) with a sandwich of braised greens, fried egg, bacon and really goaty goat cheese. Fuckkkk!!!!
Look how many bikes were outside Bows.  I hope they do more brunches.  They have Hummel's Hangover Brunch this upcoming Sunday.

The two best Beer Week events are still to come:  Beer Hunter episode screening and Anchor Brewing night at Bows on Tuesday.  We'll screen the episode around 8, and the Anchor Rep will have good prizes to give out!!! Also, you can get Anchor Steam, Liberty Ale, and Breckle's Brown on draught and get a pint glass if you want one.

And probably the most exciting event is:  Shelton Night at Pangaea on Friday.  Keg of Cantillon, anyone?  Marie D. will be in town for it, so come and say hi and drink the best beer on earth.

Did you guys catch this comment at the end of the thread about the arena?  Pretty funny.  Also, it coined a new phrase: "non-arena supporter"

I know it's expensive, but I think it's time Sacramento buys itself something nice.

Any of you non-arena supporters ever buy yourself something nice or are you only buying the bare bones basics all the time?

Let's live a little here

accidental purchase

Here's a cool interview with Sacramento artist and musician Christine Shields.  I've said it before and I'll say it again: her record is really good.

I'm not feeling that inspired by beer week, maybe because I just spent a bunch on cocktail stuff, including a top-of-the-line cocktail shaker which I accidentally bought and then decided not to take back. That's a pretty exciting story, huh?

The Ruhstaller brunch at Fat Face on Sunday sounds interesting, not so much because of the beer (I would say meh if I said meh) but because Jaymes is making special sandwiches for it.  Also, next Sunday is a Hummel Hangover Brunch. So maybe some brunch is in my future.  Here's a post on the Bows blog about all their beer week events, including some stuff about the event I'm hosting.

I'm watching the Beer Hunter episode right now and it's rad! I can't believe I've never been on the Anchor tour.

Some food trucks are going to be parked at Beatnik Studios (right off Broadway) tonight. The sandwiches sound delicious.

Rick come back!

Augh (is that what Charlie Brown says?) I am getting depressed looking at undietacos.  It's a wasteland, a desert of shows that is only enlivened by the occasional desert bloom (G. Green, Ganglians, English Singles/SLA show on ST PATRICKS DAY).  Why is this?  Because Rick isn't booking shows, right?  That's what I heard.  Please Rick, come back!! I know it's a thankless job but I send you a million thanks for all the great, fun, invigorating, inspiring shows you have booked over the years.  Fuck.

Here's my Scene and Heard in the SNR on the Locke Liver Feed.  I'm happy they had space for it.  Although a bit miffed that I was not asked to contribute to their beer week coverage, a cover story yet.  Will I go to my grave without a cover story? Perhaps. Wow, that story is really short, too.

Fedora Friday!

I gotta get a new banner photo. I hate the one I have.

First things first, are you coming to the Anchor Brewing night at Bows?  I will be there hosting a screening of the episode of the Beer Hunter where he visits Anchor.   Also, a rep from Anchor will be there giving out prizes and there will be Anchor brews.  I gotta ask Olivia which ones.  I'll let you know.  I just looked at the Beer Week calendar for the first time.  Beer Week starts Friday.  It's weird, but Hot City Pizza is going to have a bunch of sours and barrel aged stuff.  It says Friday night, but it will be available throughout the weekend.  It's in the strip mall where OpaOpa is.  Pangaea is having stout and oyster night.  I don't really agree that those two things go together.  Also, Swabbie's is jumping on the bandwagon.  Track 7 is releasing a beer, that's cool.  Iron Steaks is having.....fedora Friday? That's every Friday around my house.  Yep, no pants and a fedora for everyone, even the cat.

Breton wrote a column today about how urgent it is that we quickly sell the city's parking assets to finance an arena. Surprise. Here was a little nugget buried in there:

Some say, why not use city parking assets to fund city services?
It's simple: Cities get into trouble by using one-time assets to fund ongoing expenses. The price you get for the parking is the price you get, but the cost of services continues and goes up over time. What happens when the parking money runs out? It's bad budgeting.

Ok, am I wrong here or did he just pull a fast one? He just reframed the debate as between a) selling the once and future assets to finance an arena or b)selling the once and future assets to "fund city services"

He's completely cut the option of the city just keeping the status quo and collecting ten million (and more as time passes and parking rates are raised) dollars a year FOREVER.  Nice sleight of hand, Breton. Also, fuck you.

pictures from the set

You may have sensed some extra excitement in the air on Saturday.  If you did, it was because a movie was filming.  It's great to have these productions pumping money into our local economy.  Why, Davey probably spent 15, if not 20 dollars at Target on hot dogs and beer.

Can you believe they scored Poseidon for a cameo? What a coup. He surfed in on the river and popped over.  Inside scoop: he's a total diva.  He demanded all his jewelry be made of gold.  More pictures from the shoot after the jump

Tiki Men!!

Do you guys ever dream of living in a town without a basketball team?  What if you could read the paper without the headline every day being about the increasing urgency of finding public financing for an arena for the Kings?  What else would they find to write about? Real city issues that affect citizens, perhaps?  Also, for how long can urgency keep increasing?  Doesn't it have to reach a peak at some point? A climax?

Speaking of climax, I highly recommend "In the next room (or the vibrator play)", which is currently running at Capital Stage.  It's a good play, very well staged, with a terrific comedic performance by Katie Rubin.  It ends with a male nude scene and one woman quite audibly gasped "oh my god" and laughed, and many other people tittered.  Grow up people! They kind wrecked the intimate spell that had been created.  I bet people in cities with new arenas don't laugh when an actor bares his butt.

I have a couple of pieces in the SNR this week, one about coffee, and one an interview with the owner of Candy Heaven in Old Sac.  Both of them are accompanied by great photos.

Knock Knock LP listening party at Phono Select tonight at 7 and then Four Eyes show at Javalounge!! Oh wait, are the Four Eyes still playing?
Couple of photos I took on my day off.  I went to the Delta with a fun crew: Skipper, Archbishop "Dave" Smith and Ed H.  Free liver lunch!

Cat in the sun in Locke
Wow. Foster's Big Horn.  I had no idea the extent of the taxidermy. I literally walked around with my jaw agape. LITERALLY
This is Yeti, a magazine, mostly about music.  It's a great mag, with in depth articles about obscure bands and performers, and good photography, too.  The current issue (it comes out a couple of times a year) features a super long article about Sacramento's own Tiki Men!  Here are a couple of pictures, pick one up for yourself!  Just walk over to Newsbeat...oh, yeah, you can't do that anymore.  I got my copy at the Davis Newsbeat and any readers who live in real cities (with real arenas) can probably find one.  Does Phono Select have copies? They sometimes carry it.
 Here's a taste of what's inside
Look at those handsome dudes. Yowza

Mmmm, food

Yay! I finally feel better! Food sounds good to me again.

BAR weighed in on the Fox and Goose brouhaha (brewhaha?) in MidMo. I'm glad it's not about my Megami review!  P.S., I think she did banish it, because she got rid of the rack, right?

tales of blarg

Guys, I've been sooooooooooo sick.  I am never sick and I am a big baby about it.  I was projectile everythinging and I slept on the bathroom floor.  I feel like I have PTSD about it.  I think I puked out a tiny bit of my joie de vivre and it's not back.  Perhaps that resides in the bile? Maybe the Romans were right.

I've done nothing, I have nothing to say and I have a ton of work to get to.  How were all the weekend festivities?

comedy and beer

Did you guys know Dave Chapelle did two sets at the Punchline last night? Crazy, huh? I guess he went till 2:30 in the morning on his second set.

Man, there is a lot of stuff going on in the next few weeks.  Friday the Ganglians are playing at Bows.  Saturday there are various Second Saturday happenings, including a reprise of Future Art Notables at the Verge, and probably other stuff I don't really know about.

Next week I'm super excited that Everthing Is Terrible is bringing a live show to Bows, with MOM opening the show.

And speaking of Bows, where apparently everything is happening, I am hosting a beer week event there on Tuesday, February 28th at 7:00 pm.  It's a screening of the Anchor Brewing episode of the cult TV show The Beer Hunter.  And there will be various Anchor beers on draught.  It will be fun, and you can easily be home by 9pm!!!! I know that's the part that will really excite some of you.

Thiemann

My heart was kinda pounding as I looked at the Bee this morning (and by the way, I became a weekend subscriber because the Times is too expensive - I'm mostly after the crossword), because I knew I might be quoted.  Yipes.  Chris Macias did a big piece on Mike Thiemann and he was nice enough to think of me.  I was afraid I would sound like an ass because I didn't expect him to ask me about the Loft.  I tried to describe it and I'm pretty sure I said it was "edgy" and I might have even said "dangerous".  Anyhoo, he didn't use that part so I'm ok with it.  This sounds like a humblebrag I guess.

And really the point is that it's about Thiemann.  I'm going to Ella for happy hour today and I'm psyched.  I hope to afford a full meal there soon.

Smiller is going to get his Pliny the Younger on today, for the first time.  I hope there isn't a massive line.  Some people were waiting for like 5 hours, but that's because they went on like the first day. Some people just love to wait in line (e.g. San Franciscans).

Now let me go read the article!

Hoop of love? Is that dirty?

Fuck! this song is the biggest ear worm in the world. This band is rad! They are great live, too.

sad news.

I'm sad to say that Margaux's dad, Jerry McFetridge died suddenly this weekend.  She said it would be OK to talk about it here.  Look at these great photos she put online.  Beautiful.  Coincidentally, he was recently prominently featured in a SacBee article about some trees in the Delta.  I think the photo and quote capture his spirit really well.  I wish we could save those trees in his name?  There are actually some nice, helpful comments on the article (shocker) from people who would like to help.

NO FUCKING WAY

I can't believe this. This is awesome.
When I was still a teen (or maybe 20 and extremely immature) I had a Horny Mormons cassette that I got at Dimple Records. I didn't know nothin' about nothin' as far as Sacramento music yet, but I liked that tape. I remember there was a song about molesting chickens.

polenta n' eggs

Man, polenta is so versatile! It's worth the 40 minutes of stirring.  I made this polenta like a week ago, and I just keep slicing it up and frying it.

If you liked the movie Drive you should check out The Driver.  Refn lifted his opening sequence directly from this movie.  This movie has some of the most wooden acting you will ever see (between Isabelle Adjani and Ryan O'Neal I'm not sure which one is duller, and Bruce Dern just acts like a little bitch), but the car chases are AMAZING.  I don't know how the fuck he staged them.  And a bunch of the scenes are set in Union Station in LA.

criminy

Please, please check out the armeniac's comments on that thread with all the comments below.  I am still LOLing inside (I know that doesn't make any sense)

It is kinda harsh to come in with a hangover and read this.  However, it's nice to get people talking and it really all comes down to my subjective opinion, which is obviously all reviews are.  Yes, you can bring more or less knowledge to the table (I bring as much as I can and I care and I pay attention and I read) and a more or less sensitive palate, that's about it.  I'm no supertaster, which is probably why I'm drawn to cuisines with strong and spicy flavors.  I stand by my review.  The seafood soup that Liv had was like 18 dollars and she said it tasted freezer burned and I agreed.  I HATE writing negative reviews.  Who would enjoy it?  Maybe somebody, but I know BAR doesn't, either.

My hangover resulted from an evening that started at Bows.  I had a glass of the gamay with a shared roast beef sandwich and the squash "meatball" sandwich.  Then I had a glass of the sparkling vouvray.  They were both delicious, as were the sandwiches and the side salad.  Then, we went to Luna's because AR was hosting the comedy night.  Some of it was rough.  It was my first time (well, since Francois Fly) seeing Keith Lowell Jensen perform and he was funny.  Then, a nightcap at Simon's was really the culprit.  If you ever hear me saying "Maker's on the rocks" yell "NOOOOOOOOO!!!" and slap it out of my hand.  That's a sure sign that things have gone too far.  No, j.k., it was fun and it's not much of a hangover.

positivity within my negativity

All right.  Time for some positivity! Yeah! Wednesday! Uh, let's see...I continued my Nicholas Winding Refn jab by watching one of the most poignant gangster movies ever, Pusher 2: with blood on my hands.  This guy is seriously the most pathetic gangster with a really empty life.  It's the anti-glamour crime movie.  I liked it!!

I have a coffee article coming out in the news and review.  I'm stoked.  It's slated for the 16th, which is over a month lag since I wrote it and it feels like forever because I was so excited about it.  It was fun talking to coffee dudes (my bad that I didn't seek out a lady) about coffee.  I've been thinking about it differently since.

Any of you guys eaten at the Porch?  How about Capitol Garage?  You know it's the same people, right?  I know Cap. G. is packed for brunch but I've never had anyone recommend it.

grumpy

Just got around to reading the SNR, seriously Downtown Partnership, 7 DUDES running concerts in the park and not one woman?  That's fucked up.  Seriously fucked up.  I guess women just don't know anything about music or the local music scene.  I find it so refreshing to go see young bands and see how often they're half female, at least.  Your roster is seriously behind the times, especially because it's made up of ex-radio people mostly.  How long has it been since radio (besides KDVS) has been the least bit relevant?  Quite a few years now, sadly.  Also, if I were a business owner downtown and knew that my dues were going to hire 7 people to book one concert series that would piss me off.  The whole thing just stinks, from the stupid  name on down.

ugh, Buble

A skit on SNL actually made me laugh this week! Fallon's shtick of laughing all the time actually worked in this
and there are some really good puns. Musical guest Buble was a nightmare, however.

lists

Things I recently learned that I hate:
Stu and the Negro Problem (thanks NPR for making me listen to the worst song ever)
The Miranda July movie The Future (it stopped playing 45 minutes in and I didn't even care) these two things are very alike in my mind

Things I love: day drinking at Shady Lady
a good Ramos Fizz
posting our horrible couch for free on craigslist and having someone come pick it up!

What about you? Any loves/hates? That question is so lame that I'm kind of joking.

Friday video

So rad!

listen to Insight

At ten on Insight DWB is going to interview "local cheesemongers", which includes Ed Roehr from Magpie, and I'm presuming Felicia from Taylor's.  And the Alkali Flats will be on!

Speaking of Ed, I spied him and Janelle and their adorable tot at OneSpeed last night.  There was a chicken arborio rice soup with olive oil, egg, and parmesan on the menu that tasted like it was sprinkled with fairy dust. It was fucking delicious.  I have never made a soup as delicious.  And of course the frito misto is always superb. Even ignoring everything else he has done, that frito misto and the fact that he introduced Sac to sweetbreads puts Rick Mahan in the Sac Food Pantheon.

Christine Shields is playing at the Blue Lamp tomorrow night!! This lady is rad. Come see!

Yeah!

Awesome. The definitive pop single reviewing sage has spoken.

remember when I had non-food posts?

The Chinese New Year detritus was still in full effect outside of SF Market.  Some year I'll remember to head to South Sac on the actual day to check out the festivities.
Have you ever made flour tortillas?  EC clued me into it.  I got out the ol' Diana Kennedy and checked out the recipe.  First, you mix the lard into the flour by hand, kind of like a pie crust.  Even just lard and flour together smells good.  Don't get those yucky white blocks of lard, go to a Mexican market (like La Esperanza) and get the light brown stuff they render.  I put in half wheat flour because why not?
This dough was really nice to work with.  Moist but not sticky.
Charring pasilla chiles to make rajas.
I made up some tomatillo salsa and it was not that great.
I asked for some asada-type steak at the carniceria.
My only mistake (ever, in life) was not chopping up the asada smaller.  Next time!

Opposite world review

Oh sure, everyone else make a gueuze joke and it's funny, I make one and it kills the comment thread.  I see how it is.

Ugh, Shame at the Crest.  Two giant dongs down as far as I'm concerned.  I have never seen a movie screech to a stop like Shame does when Carey Mulligan slowly sings New York New York in tight close up. I sat there trying to mentally teleport myself out of the theater.  Funny quote from David Edelstein about it:
“Watching Carey Mulligan slowly torture 'New York, New York' to death,” wrote David Edelstein, ”I passed the time writing my Opposite World review: 'Mulligan strips away the song’s facile optimism and lays bare her heartbreaking need for affirmation. Devastating!'”

The Four Eyes also played a gid on Saturday while the Vergestravaganza was going on.  They opened with a rage jam and played classics such as "back to school", while Charles and I fought over whether Back To School or Less Than Zero came out first.  He was right, it was Back To School.  He knew because he could precisely date the Slayer song on the Less Than Zero soundtrack.

Here's the bread I made from that Moore's flour.
Pretty dense and didn't rise that much, but that's understandable for an all wheat flour loaf.  I missed the Lautner doc to make this, but doesn't it kind of look like a Lautner house?  Coincidence?
Here's the fish sauce chicken. I guess it looks fugly in this picture.  But it was delish!

Bacon-y post

Hmm...so judging the baconfest: fun, kind of chaotic, bacon-y.  I'm naturally very judgmental (I try to chill on it) so maybe judging things is my true calling? I shoulda been a judge.  I think the rules of submission were not that clear to people so some people who just submitted bacon they had cured (e.g. Jaymes from Fat Face) got a little bit screwed.  You see, other people submitted dishes they had made with the bacon they cured, so that gave them an advantage over just a slice o' bacon.  Jaymes also submitted mini versions of her bacon and egg popsicle (it is very good and custardy, not gross like you might be thinking) which probably would have won if there was a bacon dessert category, which there probably should have been.

The judges couldn't come to a consensus so we had to give numerical scores and tally them.  My favorite dish was Mulvaney's "tongue in cheek" which was bacon-wrapped tongue with a tomatillo salsa.  The bacon was very succulent and the flavors melded coherently into a whole, delicious bite.  The guy who won works for the Grange and he submitted a whole platter of dishes.  Some of the dishes were so-so (undercooked beans) but he won on the strength of a bacon cheddar biscuit sandwich loaded up with bacon jam, Canadian bacon, regular bacon, and an herbed slaw.  It was a dish I would definitely revisit at a restaurant.  It was fun chatting with Chris Macias as we judged, and I did indeed call for a palate-cleanser of bourbon on the rocks, which tasted fucking great with all that smoky bacon.  CM, if you're reading, what was the name of that type of pig?

gripe of the day is back

So my dentist is really into gadgets and he has a high-tech photo setup, which leads to him forcing me to look at pictures of my teeth all drilled to shit, while they are currently like that.  It sucks! I want to say no thanks but I don't know how.  He's convincing me that I need the fillings, but I believe him! Gripe of the day!!!!

Thanks for the spaetzle maker Skipper!!!! Works like a champ.  This is spaetzle (with a little wheat flour thrown in) Morant's weisswurst, and carrots and onions.
I finally made the bread that America was in love with a few years ago, that 24 hour no-knead bread.  Now that I have a deep cast-iron pot with a lid, it was a snap.  It sure is pretty.  I confess I haven't tried a piece yet.  However, like many things that are supposed to be "easier" (like pancake mix), making the no-knead bread is basically the same amount of hassle as knead bread, minus the 10 minutes of kneading that is a pretty Zen, pleasant activity.  But maybe it tastes better because of the time involved.  I'm sure you're waiting with bated breath to know what I think.

Did I mention I'm one of the judges of the bacon contest on Sunday?  Would it be funny if I wear a lab coat?

Breton, you must be joking

I know I'm preaching to the choir here, but what more proof do you need that Republicans are the crappier, more evil party than that they consistently try to keep people from voting?  E.G., opposing same-day voter registration and many other examples.

Breton, you have got to be kidding.  "What matters is the will of a community" to build an arena?  There is no will!  Talk to the common man in Sac: there is no will.  There is no desire.  There is no money.

Did you guys read Cosmo's excellent piece on parking privatization?  Hopefully this will be the next harebrained scheme to fall by the wayside.

Sunday at MOBS

You guys are quiet today. Is everyone over on FB arguing about that panel discussion?

MOBS is showing this on Sunday at 7:30, donation only. Sponsored by SacTown.

This just in: I'm one of the judges of the bacon contest on Sunday! 1 pm. Mulvaney's. You can get tickets here, which include bacon snacks and 3 brews or ciders.

Also, Michele Hebert's wine tasting is at Bows tonight, starting at 7 pm

I love LA

Just got back from L.A.  It was so fun.  That town sure has some good grub.  I didn't take many pictures.  Celebs spotted: Busy Phillips (from Freaks and Geeks! I was thrilled), Kirsten Dunst (with one of the Rodarte sisters), Frodo, Kelly Osbourne, David Arquette, and then a whole bunch of TV people (Topher Grace, Michelle Trachtenberg, Amber Heard? Don't know who that is).  Sully tried to bum a cig off Frodo, but he ignored him.  A few pictures after the jump

ugly, delicious grub

Wow, spaetzle is so easy to make.  Where can I get a spaetzle macher?  Skipper?  Oh yeah, you don't read heckasac, do you?  I over nutmegged this because I didn't measure but I kinda likes it.  The finished dish was too ugly to show here but it involved onions and sausage. More cooking crap after the jump.  Finches tonight at the Javalounge!

Don't fuck with Knock Knock

As we can all tell, all the action is over at the Halloween blog, although it ate my last two comments.  Maybe it is being taxed by the constant flood of comments.

Here's some video of the MidMo March cover shoot, featuring Knock Knock.
P.S. you guys know about the Finches show on Thursday, right?  It's been moved to Javalounge.

Friday video

dudes, have you seen this? I want to see this band again so bad!
Grass Widow "Milo Minute" from what rabbit on Vimeo.

hubba hubba

I saw Sunset Boulevard at the Crocker last night.  So fucking good.  It was really packed.  Gloria Swanson was amazing.  What a courageous role for her to take on.  It's harsh. Now I want to see some of her earlier films.
What do you guys think of Philip K. Dick?  Favorite books?  I just read this one and I loved it.  Doesn't the guy on the front look like Kevin Spacey?  The plot is crap and so is most of the dialogue but the genius is in the little comical touches and character vignettes.  There's one page that's so genius some other adjective I thought about just typing it in here, but that seems like going too far.  Was he a diagnosed schizophrenic?  There's a scene where he's digging a tiny implanted camera out of his wrist that is so similar to schizophrenic thinking that it's creepy.

the most depressing

Did the most depressing break room in the world  just get more or less depressing with the addition of this ancient exercise bike that no one will ever use?  Yep, these are the luxurious quarters that UC Davis employees can expect.  P.S. the median age of these magazines is 4 years.

Hoo, boy, the roster of shows for the next couple of months is not looking too hot.  And the show I'm most stoked about, Babies, lacks a venue currently.  The Wounded Lion show was really raging but I don't like their new album at all.  They're a better live band.  G. Green sounded really good.  It was nice to go to such a raging show on Dec 30th because my new years eve was pretty mellow (besides the appearance by celebrity spokesman Kokopelli)

Man, I forgot about this article.  I wish this would have gotten into the mag.

Jammin' in the New Year

I had fun jammin in the New Year in Petaluma.  Kokopelli even made an appearance as we danced around the fire.  It's exactly as cool as it sounds.

I love Animal Collective, but I popped in Feels on the way to work today and it's hard not to put it in the context of how it kind of fucked up a generation of bands (by young people, darn them) who just try to ape Animal Collective instead of making up their own thing.  I guess that's my Gripe Of The Day.

Fuck, dudes, did you know that a nice man (Vince) in Stockton (so not THE Vince) put out the Bright Ideas LP?  It looks rad and sounds even radder.  I love it!  You can stream it here today, if you like, and you can get a copy at Phono Select or straight from smiller.

gross post

This post is really just for smiller, since everyone else is off work.  Hi Scott!

Top 20 Crimes of 2011, SacBee?  How tacky.  Did any juicy rapes make the list?

Dave Attell last night at the Punchline was pretty good.  He kind of bombed, though, but he just went with it.  He was doing a lot of ad-libbing.  He blamed it on having four opening acts, and I think that was kind of true.  One of them was Sac High's own Kelly Price.  Anybody go to school with her?  She was good.  Also, Big Jay Oakerson opened and was super good.  He just did crowd work, it was impressive.  I was surprised to see that people actually get wasted in the crowd and act like asses.  During Dave Attell, one woman alternated between yelling "woo", flipping Attell off and yelling "air force".  He gave her a tshirt.  Doug Benson and Kevin Nealon are playing there soon.  The problem is, with the two drink minimum (which they enforce) it's over 50 bucks! That's pretty crazy.  Why doesn't the comedy spot book touring comedians?!?!?!?

Why didn't anyone tell me about yin yoga?  I thought it was baby/old lady yoga (which I like sometimes) and it kind of is, but it's totally intense.  My hips are so open right now.  See you at lunch, Scott.

Eww!! Gross! I know. Sorry.

tweet dat rage

It's the week the internet died.  I am only on the net right now because I'm avoiding transcribing two interviews.  Tomorrow is the ladies Xmas dayrage.  We are releasing all our Christmas rage in a cleansing rite that will help us start 2012 on the right track.  Now that I have a smart phone I am going to try to figure out how to tweet from my phone so that I can tweet dat rage, starting Tuesday, 10 am.  Backdoor Lounge.

Merry Xmas

So is it just me, or are Greg Lucas' restaurant reviews in the News and Review complete nonsense?  I know there are words and phrases there, and some (not many) of them are about food, but I can't seem to make heads or tails of it.  Let's hope this guy is not the restaurant reviewer for the News and Review for another year #GripeOfTheDay

I watched A Face In The Crowd last night.  I highly recommend it.  You will never look at Andy Griffith the same again.  It's heavy-handed as fuck, and more successful as a showbiz movie than a political satire, but overall, amazing.  That and Payday are my two favorite showbiz movies.

I saw some good movies in the theater this year.  My three favorites were: Certified Copy, Take Shelter, and Contagion.

Three of my favorite albums were: Eleanor Friedberger solo, Sonny and the Sunsets and Christine Shields.

Favorite cat: Babs
