you make the call

We've been called upon by D.P. to mediate a bet. You may recall that I settled a bet between D.P. and Heckamax last week. D.P. had conjured up some imaginary McCartney solo album that supposedly came out before McCartney (I think he had even invented some imaginary cover art for it, he's a creative guy). Turns out he was wrong. However, McCartney did write the score for a movie called "The Family Way" that came out in '67. This album does not even make an appearance on McCartney's own website, but it does exist. Does this count? Who wins the bet?

I will weigh in, not as the voice of authority, but just as a citizen of this ever growing web community that we call Heckasac (I'm misting up now). I was there when the bet was made, and I think counting this album violates the spirit of the bet. I think Heckamax still wins. Anyone?

Also:
1)Kinks
2)Rolling Stones
3)E-40
4)Beatles

Bull-shit! Some no-doubt mostly instrumental film score does not count as the first McCartney solo album. If DP wins on this technicality, then nothing is sacred!

Look at the album cover; it does say Paul McCartney: The Family Way. I can't see how it's possible for this not to count, even if it's not a real album.

I guess the question would be: is the Family Way the record DP was talking about or is it just a lucky coincidence?

the bet i made was this: mcartney is not pauls first solo album. i did not say i had any idea what this first album was, so the fact that had no idea family way existed till i was told of it's existence is a moot point. the question i want answered is does this "count" as pauls first solo album. my case: it was recored without the beatles and is an album hence a solo album. one may say " but dp it's a soundtrack" like blowfish stewart copelands first solo record? or perhaps like live ad let die by whom? paul mccartney. now i've already paid allen for this bet ;i just want an honest conclusion to thiswhole fiasco cause perhaps i actually won, perhaps not. once i am not trying to weasel out of a bet i just lucked out so ,mhecka max pay me bitch!!!!!!

DP, it's true - no court would convict you. But as an Armenian & a gentleman, I believe you did the right thing by forking over $5 to Heckamax. Perhaps he should put it towards the purchase of The Family Way soundtrack so we can all hear what we've been missing.

i'm gonna jump in here and say that it does not count as a mccartney solo album because, although he composed the thing, he apparently doesn't play on it.

Whoah, Armeniac!

I was just about to concede to you, and offer up my smelly five bucks-- but hey, if that fool didn't PLAY on it and only COMPOSED it, then I think I win.

Also, just to give a little back story on this exciting bet, Paul has admitted that he was thinking about the first Wings album when he made the wager. Hmmmmmmmmmm. He was also certain that the first Mcartney solo album was something that he heard at Mike C's house and that he was stoned at the time. Hence the first Wings album being the first Mcartney album.

Still, if the masses speak in Paul's favor,I'll be a gentleman and give him the money.

A Family Affair,

Heckamax

1.Yes, the album I was betting was McCartney's first record turned out to be the first Wings record, but; Was I betting that the first Wings album was in fact Sir Pauls first solo album? No.That would be silly as we were listening to the first Wings album when we made the bet.I was betting that 'McCartney" was not his first solo album .I clearly had no Idea that lo those many stoned moons ago Mike C. had in fact played me the very album we were enjoying. I was betting based on hazy memory of a pleasant nite at T.st.
2. Paul only composed "The Family Way", he didn't sing or play on it and everybody George Martin did all the grunt work. I agree that all this is true, but; Is not a Strauss record still a Strauss record even if Strauss niether played nor conducted a single recorded note?
I really enjoyed Al winning the bet. I payed for a Taylors sandwich, He picked up sandwiches for the whole day crew and he got to eat with us, which was a grand time indeed. so I'm more curious as to how to settle the bet than greedy fro the $. Though I hate loosing a bet on priniples.

Look, David Paul clearrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrly won the bet. I don't think that intentions should play a significant role in the outcome. I mean, if you're trying to shoot somebody and you miss and hit someone else, are you acquitted of murder because you were actually trying to kill another guy? No, murder is murder and Allen SHOULD HAVE lost five bucks for not covering all of his bases. I'm gone for one week and suddenly there's no justice in the world.

I was waiting for a justification using classical music! Totally bogus. This is pop music! Do Britney, Justin etc etc write their own songs? Of course not.But that doesn't make the first Britney record John Smith's first solo record because he wrote Baby One More Time. I was just listening to 'The Modern Jazz Quartet Plays Porgy & Bess'. Is it filed under George Gershwin? No. It is not. Maxwell, I hereby declare that you owe DP $1.75 back.

I call for a final count. If the tally is in the armeniac's favor, I will happily fork over the goddamn money.

Why do I keep thinking about this??!! Probably because my mind's so FRIED from listening to The Family Way which is like twice as trippy as Revolver. There is no concrete answer to this debate! It all comes down to names & where soundtracks fit in to the musical puzzle. There were hundreds of Beatles cash in bands in the 60's & if one had come out with a record that was like, "The Liverpool Beat Play The Songs Of McCartney", nobody would say it was a McCartney solo record because the band has a name & isn't just some faceless orchestra. Maybe it would seem different if the record was "The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra Plays The Songs Of McCartney". Both would be shitty classical versions of Beatles songs, but the fame of the orchestra somehow changes it. BUT, since the cover of the Family Way is using Paul's songwriting to sell the record, and since they're presumably songs Paul wrote specifically for this project, it could be argued that it is indeed a solo record. I think not but not enough to say DP is wrong. So taking a cue from wise old King Solomon who suggested cutting that damn baby in half to show those prostitutes the error of their ways, I say $2.50 each.
