biggert!

Skip a minute in to this newsreport to see the deal. It will help if you know French. Local eccentric Doug Biggert has published an amazing book of photographs of hitchhikers. He will be at Time Tested signing the book on March 12th at 7:30. This is not to be missed!

OK, so I missed the Ganglians show. I was bummed not to go but I had my reasons. Did anyone go? There's a good show on thursday, too. It's at Old Ironsides. The Losin' Streaks, The Fall-Outs and The Unnatural Helpers. Does anyone want to talk up the Fall-outs?

I loved The Fall-Outs' album "Here I Come" when I was 20. But then again I loved a lot of things at twenty that I can't stand behind now. Robotussin for example.

"4-Eyes: The Robitussin Years". Talk about a Secret Center missed tape opportunity.

Not to upset you, Jay, but how are the 4-Eyes coping with the loss of Gygax?

The Fall-Outs were darlings of the early nineties garage implosion, but were soon buried in the deluge of matching-outfit craprock that that scene devolved into. they made a small pile of records that were obscenely catchy and sounded (recording style always being important in the garage scene) great. if you don't really have a vocabulary for that scene, imagine 'what I like about you' mixed with 'Smells like teen spirit'.

To my ears, The Fallouts have a pop sensibility that a lot of garage bands don't have. It sounds garagey but it's catchier & not quite as formulaic from song to song. I swear I used to have "Here I Come" but maybe I was just borrowing White's copy forever. So yeah, I haven't listened to them in a long time since I don't have any of their records but I was definitely psyched when I saw this show listed.

As a Bellingham ex-pat (making me an unintentional garage rock aficionado) and someone who saw the fallouts a number of times, their live shows could be hit or miss, that first album is amazing. They are worth seeing for the chance it's an on night. I can also say that the Seattle band Unnatural Helpers have a couple of great songs, and how often do you get to see the drummer sing? At least in a Seattle band. A warm and hearty hello to all in sac. 4 Eyes, my condolences for your loss.

And yet I have no clear memories of seeing them although I am positive I did. Does this take away my ex-pat cred?

No, Natalie.. there's a reason you don't remember them. that was kind of the problem with the Fall-Outs... no 'crazy' live show to go with the raging LPs. They just set up and play. I think that's the only reason they don't have the fanatical following that many lesser bands do.

all that said, they sound great live, even if they don't move much.
