I've caught Gonuls fever

KWs new review is of Gonuls. Anyone been there lately? I'm tempted to try it now. One reason I've never wanted to go is that the name is reminiscent of an STD. Another precious week went by without any comment from the SNR on local development or the arena. Well, there were like two words in Bites about it after a weird, Bono-hating rant. Of course Bono sucks. You were surprised?

Allykat posted this awesome article in her blog. I've never heard of that Russian place on Watt, but I've eaten almost every place mentioned except there and Jamie's. When is Jamie's open?

Gonuls has a decent brunch. I like that you can order coffee in the french press and they give you these cute little scones with your meal. The lunch I tried there tasted like ass (well...what I think ass would taste like) and the service is REALLY bad if you get the guy waiter. The owner is really nice. I don't know why I always get stuck with the dude.

Are you talking about the surly mod Englishman?

My dad and I ate there once and had a pretty shitty experience. We ordered a wine tasting, that was served on a cheesy paper table mat and when we asked the server about the wines he knew nothing about them and seemed mad at us for asking. My risotto was overly cooked and glob like - basically inedible. My dad sent back his soup because it was too spicy. I tried it and even I thought it was hard to eat.

But that was a year ago or something and I think the place was still pretty new. It may have improved.

service does suck at Gunol's. and sorry Beck, but as a waitress i do notice that kind of thing.

but the food has been awesome everytime. breakfast or lunch.

I rarely pay much attention to service but Gonul's service has transcended bad both times I've been there. If you're thanking god that your food has arrived & you no longer even care if it's good or not - that's pretty unacceptable. I hope it's gotten better though - it seems to have potential.

exactly.

i do pay attention to service - but knowing what a shitty job it is, it's got to be exceptionally bad for me to mention it.

Gunol's nails it.

That Russian is almost across the street from Touch of Britain. There is another Russian place right there in the neighborhood called Arbat (I'm pretty sure). I also saw a gigantic new one last time I was in town, over by Next Time Thrift. It was big. I don't know what it's called but it is about one block before you get to next time (from downtown, on Auburn) on a side street.

Please go eat mushy peas and a proper pot of PG Tips at Touch of Britain, Beckler!!!

also, speaking of Gunol's....

there's a house almost next door that's having a garage sale this Saturday.

it's less of a garage sale and more of a moving sale actually. and, there are multiple people chipping in.

i have a bike, bookcase, craft stuff, clothes, cd's, books, and lots of other stuff.

scott whipped out your list of places in the north highlands area last night, but alas we don't seem to have enough free time lately to visit. it's still on my list.

I am sorry that I instantly forgot the new Russian superstore's name, off of Auburn. It looked hoppin' too. I do nothing, and I've got no time. I feel your pain.

The big excitment at our shack is that our banana tree is blooming! We will hopefully have homegrown bananas to fry up in a month or so.

Loved the food at Gonul's -- the zekiye mentioned in the article is unlike anyting I have ever had -- in a really great way.

But, boy was the service bad. Couldn't decide whether I preferred being ignored to dealing with the surly dude

Seriously, what's the deal with Jamie's? Being two blocks from my house you would think that I would have gotten there sometime in the past five years but somehow not. I have heard good and bad about it. I think an expedition should be mounted.

The one time I went to Jamie's I had the feeling that I was being sized up. But they were friendly as well. Just looked at me kinda like "what exactly are you doing here?". And it's not just old-man style - it's pretty rad. the menu is kinda expensive & totally heart American style. I was looking at the prices & thinking "who eats here?". I love that the answer is Darrell Corti.
