Did you know that the Original Pete's chain, which has only 8 locations total (this surprised me), has changed the name of two of its locations (midtown and El Dorado Hills) to "Pete's Restaurant and Brewhouse" because they have entered into a partnership with the well-respected Firestone Walker brewery to serve four proprietary beers? Every Monday these four beers are $2 a pint. They also serve the Firestone Pale Ale and the Double Barrel Ale, but those are not included in the discount. Here's what smiller had to say. He did not know I would be posting this. Surprise!:All their “Pete’s” beers are $2 a pint. The Firestone taps don’t have the discount. I haven’t been in a while but their rotating seasonal tap (the one that had the awesome Velvet Merkin last winter) a month or so ago was their hefeweizen which I thought was pretty great for the style. Hefeweizens don’t exactly thrill me but when one is balanced instead of overly spiced like a lot of US hefeweizens, it’s a pleasant surprise. The other beers are OK but nothing quite as good as the proper Firestone beers. They have a pale, an IPA, an amber and a red. They’re all well made without being anything too fancy. I’d definitely stick to the Firestone beers on any other day besides Monday. I think they have the Firestone porter right now which is awesome. My biggest problem with Pete’s is that they serve their brews ice cold in super chilled glasses.

Wrong! As is true with wine, different kinds of beer are best served at different temperatures. Cheap beer is best served iced cold (or preferably, on ice), because then you can taste it less.
I hate the words velvet merkin, I hate it more for a beer.

I like Firestone. The Double Barrel ale is really good. We stopped in their tasting room on our way back from Santa Barbara a few months ago and tasted quite a few good brews.

They always have four Firestone brews as well: the Pale 31, the Union Jack IPA, the porter & I think one other. Or maybe they just have three. Pale 31 is such a great pale. Not crazy hopped like an IPA but really refreshing & floral & pretty low alcohol as well. Unfortunately this brew fades super fast & the last few times I've gotten some at a store the hops have been all but gone so I usually stick with the Union Jack. I swear some hopped beers fade WAY faster than others!
Firestone does a fair amount of contract brewing (they're making me rethink that phrase since it traditionally has kind of a negative connotation) so most anything you see that's brewed in Paso Robles is probably made by them. They make the Trader Joe's Mission Street Pale & Mission Street Blonde - both are great & a total deal ($5.99) - the pale is especially good. Pretty close to the Pale 31 in fact. Natalie's favorite - Velvet Merkin - is a fantastic stout that usually only shows up in beer nerd bars so when it was the Pete's 'winter seasonal' tap, it was an insane deal for $2!

This might be off-topic, but I was walking to the co-op with heckamax the other day and we noticed this little place on S & 29th. It's a little back from the street, but looked kind of cute + new. Does anyone know of what it is? It's one building in from 29th St on the North side of S. Next to the tattoo shop.
It could possibly be a bar. That makes this relevant, right? They could serve hot and cold brews.

They had a couple of beers that they just made special batches of at that one particular brewery in Paso Robles available on tap. I think they also have another one in Buelton, but I could be wrong. Tasty!

That's a funny name for a beer. What type is it? It literally means 'Your Prick' as if it's piercing you.
Well it's from Duseldorf, and we all know how filthy they are! I was wondering what Eurige meant. The fellah on the botle was holding a cane, so I think Stiche should be translated Stick, though it is from the D-Dorf...perverts.
Eurig is a regional form of the plural your, and stechen (Stiche) is to stab or prick someone, so maybe the guy on the bottle is poking you in the stomach with his cane after you drink his beer. Old men sticking you with their cane is common enough in D-dorf. Don't turn your back on them though. You might get D-dorfed. Or maybe you become the D-dorfer after drinking it. What happened to you?

I worked a 12 hour long porno convention in D-Dorf in 97'. Selling Pils and wurst, it was hell. They have real funny accents there and I couldn't understand them. I was used to Koln or Berlin German. Plus I had to watch the same Dutch Strippers dance to Rick Astley over and over again while while drunken Dusseldorks yelled at me for more Pils and Wurst!
As for the brew, I didn't feel lik eI was being kicked in the gut by a German. I felt totally sated.
I believe it's just the beers with notes of biscuits and leather that are supposed to be served warm. That way, you can really taste the crackers and shoes.
Good point, DB - who would even considering eating ice cold shoes?
I wish there were some sort of foreign film stereotype I could throw back at DB - but damn, I just can't think of any.
