nananananananana Batman!

Oops, I just caught that I posted the wrong day for the Kabinet movie. It's SUNDAY at eight, as usual. Batman movie.

I am becoming increasingly intrigued by this Fremont Community Gardens fundraiser event. Does anyone know when it starts and ends and whether discount tickets can still be purchased today and until when. More info, anyone?

It starts at 7pm and you should still be able to get the $25 tix today - you can email one of the organizers, Evan at
evansmestad@hotmail.com for more information.

Yeah, all the snacks and wine tastings are included in the ticket price. Unlimited tastings! Wait, I still can't drink. Leon has more info on his blog. I think you can get tickets at the CADA office today, too. 14th & P.

I want to see the Batman movie, but I'm working Sunday nights.

Are there any wine snobs at the flower movie place? I think corporate should pay to have a sampling of Mad Dog, Night Train, Wild Irish Rose, Ripple, Thunderbird (do they still do the cola flavored T-bird?) and Manishevitz.

CADA? Really? They're kinda the devil. They're also real assholes. I'm suprised to see SRD peeps paying them $$.

Uh, I am not sure if CADA is taking a cut of the ticket price. Since it's a benefit for the Fremont garden, they will probably keep their paws off, right?

Yeah, I'm sure, CADA is SOOOOOOOOO supportive of the community.

Since when do CADA and the Fremont garden work together? I remember CADA were the one's who were the greatest opponent of the garden when I had a plot there years ago. Don't get me wrong, if they have negotiated a "relationship" that's great. RM

Actually... The neighborhood assoc. was able to get CADA to compromise a fraction of what was to be 100% "luxury lofts" in order to have some sort of community garden. Anyone in the community can be a part of this garden. Thing is, CADA isn't funding the project, the neighborhood is. They need all the help they can get.

Hate on CADA all you want. I know Evan, (the coordinator), personally. Even though he’s a transplant from Chicago, he’s not leaving any time soon, and it is a true passion of his to make the garden a reality for the benefit of our city and the environment. We need more active people like this in town.

About the community garden issue:

I was talking with Brad (of the turkey day bike ride among other wonderful things) about this issue. We both agreed that many supporters of the Mandela garden are fixated on the location. We sort of came up with the same idea at the same time. That is, get the city to relax property taxes for landowners willing to lend their vacant plots out for the purpose of gardening. This could be a way to make use of vacant lots that would otherwise be targets for litter and whathaveyou. A location that immediately came to mind was the lot at 16th and F southeast corner. The place is relatively clean, but would make a swell garden. If owners of lots such as this would agree to keep the lots undeveloped for, say, five years, it would benefit more people in the community than just focusing on the one location.

Just a thought.

Come on now, people...CADA and the City were sued, and part of the settlement was to dedicate a part of the Fremont Mews site back to community garden. The gardeners got a pretty good reward for their fight. CADA and the City Parks Dept have actually let the gardeners and other neighbors have a lot of saw into the garden's design. I personally saw the design in its formative stages, and it's going to be really cool. The CADA project manager who is working with the community on the design is a great guy, and he's been very encouraging and supportive.
