depressing

I didn't post about the Grass Widow/Nacho Biznass/G. Green show because I figured everyone just knew about it from facebook, but then I discovered that a lot of people I know have either gotten off facebook, aren't on it, or have too many events clogging things up, so they actually didn't know.  So yeah, it's tomorrow at Luigis!

My blue Geo only has a few weeks to live and the air finally gave out yesterday.  It's like it knows.  That's the equivalent to the kidneys shutting down in a person.  That' s a depressing thing to think about.

I have listened to that No Bunny song 5 times this morning.

now 7 times. hello? anybody out there?

p.s. the steak tartare at magpie is to die for. and i kinda hate that phrase. it's so pickle-y! it doesn't really even taste like tartare, it's something else that's better.

blogs are dying as a format. I think it might be worth considering putting out a print-only newsletter instead. Deliberate inconvenience may be the wave of the future.

I want to try that tartare but I am never with someone who wants to split it.

I admit this show was the first time I really felt the loss of facebook.

Then you told me about it and I was back on track.

are you saying the puto-mobile has already died?

The return to print journalism will be heralded as the "Slow Information Movement"!

(No relation to the "Slow Thinking Movement"--that one is already covered by the Tea Party.)

i got the tartare as an entree, with a cup of soup as the starter. it's a nice-sized portion for an entree.

no, the puto car is fine, i have two geos. the puto is the backup.

Next to your Keep Midtown Janky sticker could be the "My Other Car is a Puto" sticker or "What Kind of Geo Would Jesus Drive?"

I have the same problem Natalie. I've tried to order the tartare 3 times now to no avail. Maybe we should go together sometime.

lets just go and each get our own order. Fuck it.

G. Green is now no longer playing the Grass Widow/Nacho Business show. We have several bands that asked about playing. Gotta figure out what's fair. Fortunately, only one sucky band asked to play, so we'll choose one of the good ones!

The show's only $5 although I tried to make it more.

do tell: who is the sucky band?

all shows should be ten dollars now, or at least 8. Let the tyranny of the five dollar show end! What can you buy with five bucks these days? Nothing!

An audience. That's what you can buy for $5.

Miller's right. I still love a five dollar show. Is this something that is uncool? a bigger audience means more money at five dollars a head than a smaller audience at 8 right?

Is the triangle becoming a square once again?

I'll qualify that by saying I'd totally pay $8-$10 to see Grass Widow because they bring it. But a lot of bands (and I'd include myself in this) are mainly doing it for fun & this is reflected in the performances. I see lots of shows that are fun but aren't really worth more than $5 to me. And you can totally make money on tour playing $5 shows if you play the right places, have merch & don't let a club take all the money.

no, it's not something that's uncool. however, when will the 5 dollars rise? when will 5 dollars be considered too low? to illustrate: yesterday I was reading lisa carver's book (the woman who did rollerderby) and she put on a gg allin show in 1985 and they charged 4 dollars. it just seems like it will never go past 5 as a mental thing to people.

beckler said...

that's just a question i'm positing, I don't have the answer. and i don't put on shows so i don't really have to worry about how much people will pay for any given show. but when my coors light and slice cost almost 9 bucks at luigis, it seems absurd that i paid 5 bucks to see grass widow, who were amazing!!

I only ever price shows above $5 when the band is likely to draw beyond the limited capacity of the venue. I did expect Grass Widow could draw 100 @ $7 at Luigi's on a Saturday.

Grass Widow never played The Hub for less than $7, and it was always packed for them. I signed a contract to pay them a certain amount, so I was doing the math in my head, and figured that the show needed to be $7. As it turned out, we did okay, but only because they accepted less than our agreed amount.

Davila 666/Cheap Time/Charles Albright on 9/7 at Davis Bike Collective is $7/$10. Davila 666 was the most successful show ever thrown at The Hub, and now we're doing it somewhere smaller. I tried all the larger places, but they didn't answer or said no.

Something I've noticed about pricing and shows is that while some people can't bring themselves to pay more than $5 for a show, there are other people who won't see a show unless it costs more money. It's as if they think that if a band plays for $5, it's because they suck and don't deserve to play for more.

I'm still unclear why you "couldn't" charge more for the Grass Widow show. Because it had already been advertised at that price?

I asked to charge $7, didn't hear back, and then I saw it listed for $5. So, that's how decisions about the shows I book get made.

how much to see gg allin and suckdog? btw- a tip for you, don't ever google image the word "suckdog". you will not like what you see.

beckler said...

or maybe you will?

Gotta ask WWPTBD? (What would P.T. Barnum do?)

Tentative answer: charge by the act. In other words, kick everybody out between bands and make them pay to get back in. Example pricing scheme for a three band show: Opening band -- free; middle band -- $4.00; headliner -- $5.00; three-show bargain pass -- $8.00.

The hypothetical advantage here is that most show-goers will either pay for the $8.00 pass or the $5.00 headliner show.

But the even more obvious disadvantages are the labor required to collect fees and control the crowd.

I could imagine this scheme sparking a white riot in Sactown.
