not even worth clicking on the publish post button

Scott has entreated me to post but I don't really feel like it. The outlaw bike thing that can't be named was rad. A top local chef was there dishing up pork tenderloin and biscuits and gravy. But wait, why would smiller be amused by this, he was there. Something else, hmmmm...

I just noticed this letter in the news and review from last week:

Whine whine baby
Re “Ice ice baby” by Becca Costello (SN&R Nothing Ever Happens, November 9):
I’m going to just come right out and say what thousands of SN&R readers are no doubt thinking: Becca Costello’s weekly column is as annoying as hell.
I think I’ve given it more than a fair shake. I’ve been reading it nearly every week since its inception, waiting for the turnaround, but at this point it is quite apparent that none is forthcoming, so I will no longer bother. You should rename her column “Nothing Ever Happens Because I Am Too Busy Whining and Being Insecure to Just Let Go and Have a Good Time.”
The premise of this regular feature is good, but the execution is poor. Here’s an idea: In doing a column about happenings around Sacramento, choose a columnist who actually enjoys doing things! Otherwise, you get what we have now: A person who approaches four out of five activities with fear and trepidation, complains about discomfort during the whole experience, resents those who appear to be enjoying themselves, then wraps it up by copping out. What exactly are her qualifications for writing this column?'

That reminded me to check the column and it was gone. Temporary hiatus or has it run its course? How's this for an exciting blog post?

Dear Ed LaFrance,

Please don't hate the hater.

to be fair, i'm wondering if her 'trepidation' is a literary style and not her actual reaction to the situation. i mean, if she was writing 'everything's the bomb' in her column week after week, the readers might get annoyed. just saying, maybe she thinks it sounds cool to pretend like she's a curmudgeon. but, yeah, she does sound like a curmudgeon.

I feel slightly weird since I'm sure Becca knows some people who read this blog, but regardless, I think that column is pretty bad. I notice it more because she used to be one of my favorite SNR writers when she wasn't confined to the column. When you have to turn something like that out every week, I imagine you just go on auto pilot after a while.

There's a note that Nothing Ever Happens is on vacation in the Table of Contents.

As for news, anybody read the new Sactown yet?

your failure to post about how great star magazines and turkey are is cutting to the quick.

I read her column and I get the impression that she does like to do things that are exclusive to Sacramento -- those little weird things like the pink bicycle parade and whatnot.

I don't read her as whiny so much as perplexed. I say bump it.

It's the grown up version of this blog!

(by grown up I mean that it's actually read and it has a point)

Not that I actually think this is going to be approved, miss "I write for a newspaper that 3 people can find".

Your edge is stil sharp as ever!

I thought nothing ever happens was about this blog.

Hey anon-I don't have comment approval. That's for pussies. I do occasionally delete things that are out of bounds, but not generally when they're directed at me.

And you're right to imply, anon, that the mark of whether a paper is good or not is in how high its circulation is. That's why USA Today is the best paper in the world and the source of all my news.

I haven't read Sactown yet, I just wonder if it can get out of the huge shadow cast by Fork It. I do, however, have to stare at the humongous billboard for Senses on the way home from work every day which led me to the website, which hasn't been updated. Why bother to spend so much on a billboard if there is no new magazine out? Or is the mag out and the myspace and website haven't been updated?

Isn't Senses also a hair salon? Maybe the bb is for that; haven't seen it though...

beckler said...

It is, but the billboard is for the magazine. It's huge and it's a chick in a fur coate. You know, just like the big fur coats you see people wearing all the time in Sac.

Are you aware of the fact that many people think that Heckasac is run by Becca Costello? I was at a dinner party not too long ago and your blog came up in conversation and everyone at the table assumed that this is Becca's blog. Good thing you posted this diss, so everyone can get it straight.

How did i post a dis? The news and review printed a dis! Do you also think I am Ed LaFrance?

Well, I have an obvious bias since Becca's a friend, but I enjoy the column, and if anyone actually counted up things she enjoyed to things she tried that she did not enjoy, she has a good time more often than not, even when she doesn't expect to.
I give her credit for trying things that she isn't already sure she likes.

Hmmm. Just to clarify that I like Becca's column, "Bump it" is the opposite of "Dump it".

I didn't agree with dude's letter.

Thanks for clarifying, cuz I thought you meant like when a comic or band gets "bumbed" from a show, meaning they're out, not that this has ever happened to me.

I really tried to think of a way to respond to this by refering to the "fly" theme of your routine. "Zapped" from the show? "Swatted?" Weak. You shouldn't hire me as a writer.

If you thing I shouldn't have hired you because your puns are weak you haven't seen my routine. Weak puns, that's my genre.

KLJ said...

"have hired"? Ha, I made it sound like I hired you. Um.. congratulations, or maybe condolences are more in order.
Okay, time to drink more coffee it would seem.

Becca Costello is such an engaging writer! I think she makes her writing personal, so if you don't like the column, it just means you probably wouldn't enjoy hanging out with her in person. Personally, her column brings a smile to my face every week. I am bummed it's no longer in the paper.
