I'm about to tell you how to make the best thing in the world. Buy some habaneros. Roast them in a 350 degree oven until they start to turn a little black in spots. Remember what I said about that being one of the best smells in ever?
Put some sandwich bags or latex gloves (ew, why do you have latex gloves?) over your hands and remove the stems and most of the seeds.
Put them in a food processor and squeeze the juice of one juicy lime over them. You can use this paste to flavor all kinds of stuff. Of course it is fiery hot, but that's why you just use a little. Like a half teaspoon in a can of black beans? Amazing.
How about buy some crawfish at the farmer's market and then make some habanero lime butter to dip the meat in?

also annoying: no Nobel prize again for Philip Roth? What a surprise, it's someone that I've never heard of yet again. Here's a quote from last year from the secretary of the jury.
"Of course there is powerful literature in all big cultures, but you can't get away from the fact that Europe still is the centre of the literary world ... not the United States," he told the Associated Press today.
"The US is too isolated, too insular. They don't translate enough and don't really participate in the big dialogue of literature," Engdahl said. "That ignorance is restraining."

I think that comment is interesting given that a lot of current theory and art history suggests that the cultural center of art and literature is fracturing as a result of globalization.

I don't know if I want to try again, I've tried a lot. I've read at least two books all the way through and one of them was corny as hell (the summer before the dark), one was good and creepy (the fifth child). And then I've failed to get through a couple of them (martha quest, the golden notebook). but wait, she has a series of books about cats? i'm there. one more try.

The good terrorist is one of my favorite novels. It's about a group of English radicals who squat in an abandoned london house and get mixed up with the IRA. The protagonist is a very sympathetic character, and the reader roots for her all the way to the bitter end, even though lessing methodically indicts everything that she and her comrades believe in.

I have only read one Lessing and it was pretty meh.
Micheal Chabon does not deserve the Nobel Prize in literature. He is too casual. I know that no one said he did.
For literary prizes though I have always felt that the Nobel doesn't really jibe with my style. I am more of a PEN or a Booker lady.

I was surprised that Hilary Mantel won the man booker prize. she is one weird writer. hmm...i guess I haven't read that many other man booker prizewinners, looking at the list, just paddy clarke says ha ha ha and (barf) the life of pi. oh and remains of the day. that one is so good! which ones have you read?

Life of Pi is just totally not my kind of book. For a lot of reasons. We'll have to agree to disagree. You have the Booker prize on your side.
