bored to the bone

I'm bored!

I finally read the latest Edible Sacramento. Hank Shaw has an informative article about buying fish. Garrett McCord spent a few days working at Karen's bakery and cafe in Folsom and wrote an entertaining article about it. I never go to Folsom and had never heard of this place but some of the savory stuff sounds intriguing.

There are so many sadly hilarious things about this business plan. Good news to us grown and sexy types-the name of the over-30 dance club "frisky rhythms" has been changed to "metamucil manor", no j.k., it's now called "district 30". The developer invented a new word! He's not bringing competition to existing businesses, he's bringing "co-opetition". Glad he clarified that. I want to know how Three Monkeys was able to re-open. More city money?

Is it odd as I read this post that you had an angry raspy voice?

So, would one have to show ID to prove you're OVER 30 to patronize the over-30 club?

And Pizza Rock? What a stupid f'ing name. And concept for that matter. Why Sacramento, why?

Sounds like a winner to me.

I'm gonna hold out until 2012, and then maybe District 50 will be in full swing. Don't laugh, it'll be the BITCHINEST after party every time Madonna comes to town!

I'd be way more into it if they called it 'fraggle rock'.

Well you know the whole Speakeasy themed bar trend has hit its peak if people are talking about building one in Sacramento.

Also speaking of exciting events, I hear that there's a small farm conference going on at UCD today for artisinal bean growers. Rumor has it the lunch is being catered by Rancho Gordo!

I'm still stuck at "Frisky Rhythms". I kind of love it.

That whole article just points up a belief of mine - Californian suburbanite people believe the most perfect example of modern city planning is 'Downtown Disney'.

Now, if only everywhere could be more like that.... ahhh...progress!

The funny thing is that the "electric light parades" at Disneyland were in some ways inspired by Sacramento's 1895 "Grand Electric Carnival," that celebrated the connection of the long-distance electric line between Folsom and Sacramento.

I'm a bit torn by the whole mermaid-bar project: none of the projects sound personally appealing, but if they do succeed in making people come out to K Street in greater numbers (helping secure its position as a nightlife spot instead of a shopping mall) it will gain momentum and hopefully spur things like more live music venues and specialty shops, creating the kind of place that you don't find in the suburbs.

The other interesting part, that I'd like to know more about, is the "preservation of a vintage billboard." If it's the one I am thinking about, it is a great old sign painted on the brick on the alley side. Hopefully they're also thinking of retaining a great vintage window in the building too...but I'll have to ask someone about that. The alley side of the building has a lot of historic fabric, even though the front doesn't anymore--but it could play into that wacky "alley activation" stuff people have been talking about.

I assume that this "District 30" will do something like what MIX does: the older you are, the cheaper the cover (21-29 pay $20, 30-39 pay $10, 40+ free.)

I think the Shady Lady fits into the Speakeasy bar trend.
