ella, you have got to check out this 1972 French documentary "Saravah!" about brazilian music...

...which features some rediculously awesome footage of a 19 year old bethania. the shit gave me goosebumps. a young, cocky baden powell talking about the nature of things, paulinho da viola pulling tunes out of thin air, on and on. it's kind of like "don't look back" in its approach, but it's in color. they have it at netflix, but it's not subtitled, at least the copy i saw. (also the elis regina TV special is amazing, if you find it.)
Thank you, the Waterboy, is that what the song's called? I saw her perform in it on Scorcese's Dylan documentary and couldn't believe what i was hearing. I bought Sings Ballads and Blues, which I thought contained that song, but I was wrong. Wonderful album, but no barking... I'll try and track down the Waterboy now.

Also in the intense and kinda scary folk lady category is Buffy Sainte-Marie.
Hey, what about Maria Bethania? I'm so into her lately.
Ella
I fucking love Odetta, even if I don't always like her songs. Her intensity and style always come through.
