uptown
There is a charming review of the Uptown Cafe on chowhound. Smiller and I were just discussing that place. I'll have to go there sometime soon now that I know there is a good route on the bike trail. I always liked going to breakfast there, and it seems like a good way to beat the downtown breakfast crowds. On second thought, I remember a few sundays when we headed out there before recalling that it's closed on sunday, so keep that in mind if you're going to go. I haven't gone in years, has anyone been lately?

I used to live on the same block as uptown. The owner/head-cook, George, is a pretty friendly guy. Back in the day he used to cook me up a customized vegetarian breakfast.
I haven't been there in years.
I also haven't been there in years, but that isn't stopping me from commenting on this. I remember they had a very good classic grilled cheese sandwich. Now, for no other reason, here is a list of some grilled cheese sandwiches in Sacramento:
Nationwide Meats. The best in town. You have to order it on sourdough with american cheese. Perfectly golden everytime and very melty.
Whitey's Jolly Kone. Okay, it's in West Sac, but it's only $1.20 and for that price, you can order two or three. Plus they have crushed ice.
Ink. Not too shabby for a "fancy" place. A little light on the cheese, but extra points for the pepper jack and texas toast.
Safeway. They have a three cheese panini. I would say that three cheeses are too much for a panini because a lot of the cheese gets pushed out onto the sides when they press it. You end up with a lot of cheese paper and less in the sandwich. 5 out of 10.
Original Perry's. Only worth it if you get to sit in the "log room." The sandwich is pretty standard, a solid 7 out of 10.
Dad's on S street. Delicious! I love their grilled cheese. Another classic. I get pepper jack and cheddar for a little zing.
Guess who just got really hungry typing all this out?

Mmmm, a classic grill cheese is worth ranking. Thanks for all the recommendations Niki.
I don't know if anyone will respond to this, but what's the deal with The Plantation? I used to drive by it every day, on my way to work, but never stopped. It looked worth checking out, but I never have. I'm getting pretty good at making my own collard greens, but I could use something to compare them to.
My opinion on the Plantation, and people can argue if they think I'm wrong, is that it's a cool concept (besides the name) and the people who run it are very nice, BUT the food is just so-so and due to the fact that they have some aspirations to fanciness, the prices are too high. The last time I ate there, people's food was coming out at different times and the temperatures of things were weird. I think they premake some stuff and microwave it. Like the chicken. Have you tried E and Js yet? You might be better off going there, although it's pretty far out of downtown. But it's near a goodwill.
